From Irvine, With Love
For 11 years now, Mitchell B. Goldstone has been a Californian by address.
But he is a New Yorker by history (he grew up in Great Neck) and family ties
(Lewis Rudin, the New York developer who died on Sept. 20, was a
relative). He met Carl Berman, his personal and
business partner in New York 18 years ago. And he calls
himself "aggressive, cosmopolitan, all those things that make
up a New York mind-set."
He is also an entrepreneur - he and Mr. Berman own 30 Minute Photos Etc.,
a photography shop in Irvine, Calif. - with an
abiding belief in the healing effects of capitalism. So
since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Mr. Goldstone, 39,
has persuaded about 130 Irvinites, including several Muslim Americans,
to buy full-price tickets to fly to New York on Nov. 9 for a weekend
of theater, museums, restaurants and shopping. They will also donate tickets
and restaurant meals to rescue workers. "We want to show the world that
flying is safe, and that New York is safe, open and alive," Mr. Goldstone
said.
